AI coding tools have rapidly evolved from autocomplete to agents that autonomously build entire applications, but production infrastructure is still designed around humans. As agents write more code and the bottleneck shifts to operating that infrastructure, it’s clear that the agents building software should run it as well.

## Investing in TierZero

We led the seed round in [TierZero](https://www.tierzero.ai/) last year to redefine production engineering. The entire toolchain from Datadog, PagerDuty, etc. to CI/CD pipelines, was built for humans. Dashboards for humans to look at. UIs for humans to click through. And alerts for humans to respond to. But as agents take over the work of maintaining software, they need a new harness to operate production systems autonomously.

TierZero was created to be that harness, integrating across a company’s observability stack, instrumenting and deploying code, resolving failures, and escalating only when human judgment is required. The founders [Anhang Zhu](https://www.linkedin.com/in/anhangzhu/) and [Yun Park](https://www.linkedin.com/in/yunpark93/) have built and managed production systems from startups all the way to global scale at companies like Facebook and Databricks. They are fearless in getting into the guts of any system, technically excellent, and uniquely gifted at simplifying complexity for end users, whether they are humans or AI.

I had the opportunity to partner with Anhang as his co-founder while building his previous company, [Mayhem](https://www.accel.com/companies/mayhem), which Accel backed in 2018 and was eventually acquired by Niantic. Prior to founding Mayhem, Anhang was early at Facebook and part of the founding ReactJS team, shipping the world's first production-grade React app. Similarly, my friendship with Yun goes back to his undergraduate years at Berkeley, after which he left in 2015 to join Databricks as engineer #25. He spent the next decade at the frontier of software infrastructure and most recently led the AI Serving and Ops team.

We are grateful to be their partners at TierZero, and since launching quietly last year, they’ve grown to serve tens of thousands of engineers at fast-moving companies like Brex, Discord, and Drata, resolving thousands of software and infrastructure issues every day. We weren’t the only people impressed by the team and product though, and as a result, Anhang and Yun are announcing a new milestone for the company today.

## Cognition Acquires TierZero

[Cognition has acquired TierZero](https://cognition.com/blog/welcoming-tierzero), and we believe the combination will set a new standard for autonomous software development. It is no longer enough to just accelerate code generation—engineers need to increasingly remove every bottleneck across the software development lifecycle. TierZero understood that early, and now they are building towards that bigger vision at Cognition.

Congratulations to the entire TierZero team on this milestone, and thank you for letting us be a small part of the journey so far. We’re excited to continue partnering with Anhang, Yun, and the team as they define the next generation of software engineering.
