If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
My dream superpower would be reading minds. I’ve always loved understanding what makes people tick. I’m naturally curious and ask questions to get at the thoughts and motivations underneath the surface. Real mind reading isn’t possible, but mastering the art of drawing out what someone is really thinking is the next best thing.
What was your first job?
Scooping ice cream at a local shop in Salem, Massachusetts. I grew up nearby in Lynn and later Swampscott, which are all small towns just north of Boston. I was twelve and remember how tough it was to bend over and pry the ice cream out of the buckets. I learned fast that I needed stronger forearms, but more importantly I learned the basics of customer service and sales: hand people their spoon and napkin when lines were short, let them self-serve when things got busy. Most of all, I learned what it felt like to deliver a great product and put a smile on someone’s face.
Who inspires you most?
Abraham Lincoln is the historical figure who inspires me most. He navigated through such intense social conflict with principle, deep thinking, and a genuine care for people and their future. I’ve read Team of Rivals multiple times and watched countless documentaries on his rise from humble beginnings to the presidency, and I’m especially struck by his decision to bring his rivals into his cabinet. His leadership lessons continue to shape how I live and lead.
